Obsessive-compulsive Disorder
Obsessive-compulsive disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by obsessions (unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings, or sensations) and compulsions (behaviors that make you feel driven to perform some specific ritual or behavior). The behaviors are often carried out to get rid of the obsessive thoughts. This usually provides short-term relief from the obsessions and not carrying out the rituals can caused increased anxiety.
There are a wide variety of obsessions and compulsions. One of the more common forms of OCD involves an excessive fear of germs and the compulsion to wash your hands repeatedly. People suffering from OCD usually recognizes that the behavior is excessive or unreasonable but is unable to eliminate the obsessive thoughts or control the ritualistic behaviors.
Left untreated, OCD can disrupt your life and prevent you from enjoying things you would normally enjoy. The symptoms of OCD can interfere with your ability to work or go to school and make making or maintaining relationships difficult.
Counseling for OCD
Counseling can help you to reduce or eliminate the symptoms of OCD and put you back in control of your life. The most effective therapy for Obsessive-compulsive disorder is Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT often involves situational exposure in which you are exposed many times to a situation that triggers the obsessive thoughts, and learn gradually to tolerate the anxiety and resist the urge to perform the compulsion. Counseling for OCD can also provide you with effective ways of reducing stress in your life that may increase OCD symptoms, reduce anxiety and help you to resolve inner conflicts related to your obsessive thoughts.
